In any task it require a great deal of time, energy and attention. If you get it right, you prevail;and if you get it wrong, most likely you fail.

But

Is it really unbeatable?

NO, IT IS NOT!

Well, it turns out you can achieve effective goal setting by applying six easy steps in the right manner.

Having said that, a question might be bothering you right now:

“Why are goals and effective goal setting techniques  so important to have success in any endeavour”?

In response to that I would say that;

If you don’t have you goal in life; you are just like cloud which hovers around here and there aimlessly. To achieve something in life whether it’s small or big you need to have a goal set.

Similarly, effective goal setting can only produce desirable outcomes.

Here’s the catch:

I will share six  effective goal setting techniques which can play a decisive role in your success:

1. Have your goal/goals in writing:

Before doing anything; grab a pen and write down your goals. It should be the first step.

Why is it so important?

Reason is that we think about many things in our minds, some of them are really good ideas but we never set them as our goals. But once you write them down it becomes part of the record.

You can lose a thought but you cannot lose something which you carefully written down in your diary of your laptop.

So,

Don’t Wait any further write down your goals.

2. Set concrete long term goals:

Always have concrete long term goals. Concrete here means your goals should not be abstract and vague. Your goals should be vivid and realistic.

Why is it so importants?

Because concreteness provides you with an opportunity converge your energies on one point, that is your goal.

Moreover, you should focus on long term goals instead of short term goals.

E.g A concrete long term goal would be “By 2025 I will have a Phd in finance and will have an executive job at World Bank. Whereas, a vague goal would be “I would like to have a higher degree and a well paid job in the near future”.

Both goals have astounding difference.

Long term goals are more durable, sustainable and provide better outcomes. At least five years of duration is recommended in this regard.

This will ensure effective goal setting.

3. Divide long term goals into small segments:

Think about this,

If you decide to get into gym and have a aesthetic body. You never worked out in your life and you go in and start lifting heavy right away.

Chances are that you will get yourself badly hurt.

Look:

You go in the gym, get familiar with the aura first. The you divide your task from easy to hard. In the beginning you lift small weights and then it get heavier. You don’t want to achieve the work of months in days.

That is why you divide your tasks into smaller milestones..

Same applies to effective goal setting.

For effective goal setting, long term goals do not mean that you cannot take them on step by step.

In fact the best strategy to deal with long term goals is to divide them short term achievable goals. Moreover, goal setting get much easier and productive if long term tasks are distributed in short packets of time.

In addition, getting the short term goals gives keeps your motivation level up and going.

4. Apply “5-A” method to your goals:

You are probably already aware with the 5-A method. Bu do you apply them in the correct manner. For effective goal setting 5-A has no other substitute.

 a) Accurate goals: 

Your goal should be accurate in nature so that it provides you a clear direction.

For example, if you say “I want to become an eminent sportsman” it will be a goal but vague. If you say “I want to become a midfielder like Zidane in football” it is more specific.

The more clarity you have in your goals the more easy they are to concur.

b) Assessable goals:

Likewise, your goals should be assessable. You should be able to measure your goals time and again.

E.g you plan to appear in a competitive exam and you set a goal for you that by the end of this year you would have finished the course. So you should be able to measure your progress by some means, like chapterwise or topicwise coverage of the reading material. Furthermore, once you are able to do that you will get to know your pace.

It gives you a better idea of where do you stand in the journey towards the final prize.

c) Achievable goals:

You should also concentrate on pragmatic goals which could be achieved rather than getting carried away by the excitement of effective goal setting and setting unrealistic goals.

E.g if you set a goal for yourself that you want to be the next President of the United States and you are not even a citizen of US, that’d be a ridiculous goal to set actually. Perhaps you should seek for something that is practically possible in some way or other.

5-A points

d) Apposite goals: 

Your goals should be apposite to your direction of life and to where you want to proceed in your career.

If you don’t have the relevance all your effort will be in vain. I’ll explain how:

E.g If you are a doctor and you like the field of medicine. But you realize that surgeons are making more money so try to quit medicine and opt for surgery.

Do you think it’s going to work for you? Heck no!

So, never lose relevance. If you do that, it will make you irrelevant.

e) Apt goals:

Your goals should be apt, timewise. E.g If your goals is to become a Ph.d, you should give yourself a timeline when to start collecting data and when to submit the thesis. 2 months to data collection, 3 months for analysis and findings, 3 months for literature review and so on.

Therefore, when you do  that you have a fair idea about the time which you are consuming and you will consume over the time.

Note:  Of course you can make adjustments regarding time which you allocate to each task. But those changes should be done keeping the end results in mind.

5. Re-evaluating your goals:

I can’t emphasize more on this part.

Always remember to “judge” your goals. If you don’t do that you are most likely to end up in a debacle.

Success is a slow and steady process. It requires timely educated alteration.

So, constantly evaluate your goals to see where you stand. Don’t freak out if you face any problem.

And make adjustments if needs be.

6. Stick to ethics for effective goal setting:

In your journey to achieve your goals, never let go the lessons of ethics.

Be ethical in your affairs.

At the end of the days it matters a lot.

Don’t listen to Machiavelli. End doesn’t justify means! If you can achieve some thing via right path, why go for shortcuts.
